V-Grooving vs. Non-Grooved Jewelry Boxes

Sep 17, 2026

If you've spent any time sourcing jewelry boxes, you've probably noticed something: most boxes on the market don't have V-grooves. Walk through any packaging fair or flip through supplier catalogs, and you'll see the same thing—plain scored boxes, no V-cut in sight. Why? The answer comes down to one thing: cost.

What Is V-Grooving, Exactly?

A V-groove is a V-shaped cut made along the fold lines of a rigid box. It removes a thin strip of material so the board can fold into a clean, sharp 90-degree angle. It sounds simple, but it requires extra machine time, precise calibration, and more handling. Every groove has to be cut at the right depth and position, or the box won't fold properly.

A non-grooved box skips this step entirely. The board is simply scored—pressed with a line—and then folded. It's faster, simpler, and cheaper to produce. For high-volume orders, that cost difference adds up quickly.

A V-grooved box folds into a crisp, sharp 90-degree angle. The corners are clean and defined, and the box holds its shape well. It looks and feels premium—the kind of detail that makes a customer pause before opening it.

A non-grooved box, especially when made from thicker rigid board, tends to bulge or round off at the corners. The board resists folding, so the shape looks softer and less precise. On thinner material, the difference is barely noticeable. But on heavy board, it's obvious.

Why Most Brands Choose Non-Grooved

For most jewelry brands, the decision is straightforward. Non-grooved boxes cost less, and when you're producing thousands of units, that savings matters. If your packaging is functional—meant to protect the product and carry your logo—a non-grooved box does the job perfectly well.

V-grooving costs more, and that's why most boxes don't have it. But it's not a waste of money—it's a choice about where you want to spend. If your budget is tight or your packaging is practical, non-grooved is the smart pick. If you want edges that look sharp and feel high-end, V-grooving is worth considering.
